About the Post Office MIS

The Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (POMIS) is a government-backed savings scheme that pays a fixed monthly income on a lumpsum deposit, for a 5-year term. The payout is fixed at the rate applying when the account is opened, and the deposit is returned at the end of the 5-year term.

Enter your deposit and the scheme's interest rate, and this calculator shows the fixed monthly income it would pay.

Frequently asked questions

How is POMIS monthly income calculated?

Monthly income = Investment × annual rate ÷ 1200. For example, ₹9,00,000 at 7.4% pays ₹5,550 a month. The principal is returned at the end of the 5-year term.

What is the maximum I can invest in POMIS?

As of 2026, the limit is ₹9 lakh in a single account and ₹15 lakh in a joint account. Check the current limits, as the government has revised them before.

What is the POMIS interest rate and is it fixed?

The government sets it each quarter, and the rate when you open the account stays fixed for the full 5-year term even if it changes later. It has been around 7.4% recently.

Is POMIS income taxable?

Yes. The monthly interest is taxable at your slab. There is no TDS on POMIS, but you must declare the income in your return, and there is no Section 80C benefit on the deposit.

Can I withdraw POMIS before 5 years?

Premature closure is allowed after one year with a penalty — 2% of the deposit if closed between 1 and 3 years, and 1% between 3 and 5 years.

Disclaimer: This calculator is for information and education only. It is not investment advice and not a recommendation. Interest rates on deposits and savings schemes are set by the bank or the Government and can change; where the calculator takes a rate, the figures hold it for the whole term. Tax on the interest, penalties and early-withdrawal rules are included only where the calculator shows them. The Government notifies small-savings rates every quarter; the rate in force on the day of deposit applies for the whole term. Every figure is computed solely by applying the formula and assumptions stated on this page to the inputs you entered.
